Rupert Murdoch Comments
Murdoch offers what he believes to be the ways newspapers can survive during this switch to digital. "First, media companies need to give people the news they want." Murdoch goes on to add, "My second point follows from my first: Quality content is not free."
I think this is true because the web is very segmented, more people are using it to stay connected with friends and join certain social groups that they feel are important. So it does make sense that companies should select stories that appeal to their audience.

Some History of Shippensburg
This is believed to be the oldest house in Shippensburg. "The home as 332 East King Street, which was constructed by Samuel Perry in 1735, may be the oldest building in Shippensburg."
"Two residents of the house at 122 West King Street played prominent roles in printing in the Shippensburg of the early 1800s." One of the first newspapers was called "The Spirit of the Times."
"In 1878, the large frame building which held photographer H. F. Beidel's studio stood on the southeast corner of King and Penn streets."
"The building at 16 North Penn Street has served as one of Shippensburg's entertainment spots for nearly 60 years." This building was known as the Victory Playhouse, which first played silent movies with the addition of an organist playing a pipe organ, to the front and center of the stage.
"The site at 54 East King street once played an important part in Shippensburg's cultural life." "A building known as the Old Opera House stood at this location and during the late 1800s, its second floor, complete with balcony, was used for performances of live shows, musicals and various celebrations. The last major affair held in the building was a March 30, 1899 welcome home reception for Shippenburg's 16 Spanish-American War veterans."
Well that's all for my history lesson. If you would like to know more history this book is a great resource.

Assignment 5: Facebook as a Marketing tool
The first site I found: The Facebook Marketing Bible: 24 Ways to Market Your Brand, Company, Product, or Service Inside Facebook. I found this site to very informative about Facebook and offered good advice to marketers considering Facebook. One statement I found interesting was on whether Facebook is right for your company.
“Inherent in the current state of Facebook is a culture of transparency that devalues and ignores inauthenticity. If you’re afraid to show the real people behind your campaign, that’s okay–but save your time and money and go somewhere beside Facebook.”
Besides discussing whether Facebook is right for your company, the site also suggested using Facebook groups as a way to build a strong customer base and market your company. A company can post discussion topics and photos to promote business and inform others of an event or new product associated with your company.
Other than listing ways how Facebook can be beneficial for companies, other articles I found during my research on this topic suggested Facebook and other online networking site are becoming such a useful tool that communities are getting involved to inform other of their importance.
For example, the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce offered a seminar on social media and gave reasons why businesses should get involved. Most of the reasons are similar to why companies should work with Facebook.
According to Vicki Parry, marketing manager at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, people use Facebook and other social media to “Connect and engage with current and potential customers and increase awareness about products and services.”
It is interesting to see how communities are getting involved with spreading the word about how helpful Facebook can be to companies. The third site I found was structured the same as the first. It list about 32 different ways a company should use Facebook to attract business.
This site listed tips like: “Share useful articles and links to presentation” and use “valuable resources that interest customers and prospects on your wall, to establish credibility”. Another important tip is to combine Facebook with other social media tools like Twitter. For example, when someone asks question on Twitter, you can respond in detail in a blog post and link to it from Facebook.
Even though the pervious sites I mentioned listed helpful tips about Facebook, I found another site that was even more helpful for companies who are deciding to use Facebook. This site lists 100 articles on how companies can use Facebook. The site features articles on targeting the right demographic to how-to guides. It was list some dangers of Facebook, which could also be useful for a company to know.
So if any businesses are considering working with Facebook they should check out any of the sites I have listed above.

Podcast Review “Panel- Online Giving Markets: Niche or Revolution?”
The podcast started out with two hosts who introduced themselves and talked about what the panel of experts would be focusing on. Next, the podcast started with someone on the panel introducing all of the experts and asking questions. Most of the questions discussed revolved around if online giving was a niche or a new revolution for fundraising and profits.
Not only was the content good, but I also found the technical aspects to be good as well. The beginning when the two hosts introduced the topic the podcast was very clear. Then panel started talking, the sound was good, but it did sound a little muffled. The only thing I might change was to shorten it by about 20 or so because podcast was about 75 minutes long.
Overall I enjoyed listening to the podcast and I’m glad I found the website. I planning to use the information I learned from the podcast to study if online fundraising is profitable for non-profits.

Op-Ed piece
There are a bunch of different groups I was thinking about researching. I narrowed it down to two groups I would be interested in learned more about. One was the group of people who are living with Lupus; mostly because I recently found out I have Lupus.
Another group I am interesting in researching is wounded veterans. I picked this group for a couple different reasons. Right now my younger brother is in Afghanistan and will be coming home soon. I’m so happy for that! My brother is not hurt and hopefully he will stay safe between now and the time he comes home. I feel that since my brother is in the military I have a better understanding about seeing someone I love go off to war then someone who does not have know everyone in the military.
Other then my brother, there is someone else who is very special to me and is one of the reasons why I decided to research wounded veterans.
I met Bryan Anderson at a conference at the Hershey Lodge in April of 2009. Anderson joined the Army in 2001 and in October 2005 he was hurt in an explosion. He lost both of this legs and his left hand. He also endured about 40 different surgeries and 13 months in Walter Reed Army Hospital.
Bryan’s story was featured in his hometown newspaper and someone from Esquire Magazine noticed the article.
His story was featured in the January 2007 edition of Esquire Magazine he was even on the cover of the magazine. In the article Bryan explains his take on life after his accident:
“I'm not going to say your whole life is planned out for you, but I think there are certain things that are supposed to happen to you, and however you handle that defines you. So this happened to me.”
With this in mind and after spending time with Bryan, I have learned to deal with own diagnoses. When I am complaining about little things in life like being stuck in traffic I just think, “I could be sitting in traffic or laying in a hospital bed sick and hurting?” Then being stuck in traffic doesn’t seem so bad.
I think many people just need to stop and appreciate what they have. Everything can change so quickly.
So now I am volunteering for the Lupus Foundation of Pennsylvania. I love doing this because it’s a great way to meet new people and other Lupus patients. I am working on a communications plan and I am in the process of completing some promotional materials for the Lupus Gala in April.
Here are some important sites to me that I hope others will check out as well:

So it is easy to see how there could be some competition between local news stations and the Internet.
